Is cutting off Cuba the answer?

Mary and I had the privilege of visiting Cuba last year … I really don’t understand the threat to the US here….these people are so poor and so behind the rest of the world. We are the strongest nation…this just feels wrong. But, alot has felt wrong in the last few years.

I think today the threat of Russian infiltration is very low. It’s also clear from the Infrastructure in Cuba that there has been no investment for 50+ years. Right now Cuba has been left out to dry and unsupported by their traditional backers. The new seems to want to move forward.

What concerns me is the extreme poverty and lack of essentials just nearby. To me, desperately poor people can be just as scary as those with guns.

I’ve been all over the world. Making our enemies want a Starbucks and not shoot us seems to be working better than anyone ever would have expected. Let people have a good life and live their dream.

Cutting Cuba off again after so much recent progress is what feels wrong.

Algorithms to Live By? I don’t think so…

Google probably has one of the best AI Powered Algorithms out there to decide what to serve me up as content.   No question.  Years and billions of points of information allow Google, Facebook, and others to target you incessantly.

This rise of “algorithms” to make decisions is a non-stop debate. It goes something like this….

  1. Feed your AI engine enough data
  2. “train it” to do the right thing
  3. Human decisions are unnecessary.

Except, then you have this….today, the Google algorithm served me with a beautiful ad to have an affair with Ashley Madison, and then concurrently a Christian Backpacking experience with Wayforward Adventures….clearly, the algorithm is a bit confused…

Or is it?   Hmmmmm.

Deferred Dreams? Not.

Received this from a friend this weekend.   As a FORMER racecar owner (in fact, I owned THREE).   This cracked up me.  It’s so true.

A good friend asked me once how much money it actually costs to race.  My answer…”All of it”.

What dream are you deferring?

For me it’s learning to fly. I was fortunate and inspired today to take action by my brother in law, an accomplished private pilot.

Is it fear? Is it lack of perceived funds? Time?

Its been one of those goals on my bucket list for far too many years. Let’s do this!

I am a proud relative of Walter Jenkins, advisor to LBJ

I learned recently that Walter Jenkins is my great uncle. He was my grandfathers brother. He served as a senior advisor to the LBJ White House. He was well regarded and respected by LBJ for over twenty years.

In fact he was by LBJs side as he took the presidency after the horrible Kennedy assassination. As I’ve learned more about this humble kind man from Jolly Texas I also find the treatment of him by LBJ and the news to be absolutely horrible but not unsurprising.

He was caught having sex with another man at the YMCA in Washington DC. In fact this happened one month before a very close election which Johnson would be elected on his own. Walter resigned and returned to Texas in shame to live a quieter more private life in Austin. He never “came out” as gay. I don’t know if the event was real or fabricated. It doesn’t matter to me. By accounts he was a hard working fair and humble servant to our president.

As a youngster born after this happened I never heard the real story. It just wasn’t discussed in our family. But the more I have learned about Walter and his contributions to calming LBJ down I now wonder what policies might have been influenced had he remained by LBJs side.

I don’t know the full story here no will any of us. The HBO movie “All the Way” does a really respectful job of what went on in the White House and seems to do a good job of honoring Walters role. It’s a worthy watch.

What I do know is that I am proud to be related to Walter Jenkins. I don’t care one bit about the other stuff.
